FAQ

A few frequently asked questions about mindfulness...

What is mindfulness?

A simple operational definition is ‘present moment awareness without judgment’

It is an innate human capacity that we have never been formally trained to develop. It enables us to direct our attention to the present moment with an attitude of some kindness towards both our experience and ourselves.

What are the benefits?

Over the last 30 years substantial international scientific research shows that mindfulness has many benefits including helping to improve concentration and focus, reduce stress and anxiety and encourage greater compassion and empathy.

What are some common myths about mindfulness?

  • Mindfulness is not a quick fix and developing it takes some time and commitment. Just like we might train our bodies through physical exercise, we can train our minds in new ways.
  • Mindfulness does not bring permanent calm or get rid of thoughts but helps us develop new powerful skills.
These improve our resilience to accept and respond better to stress in our lives and to enjoy and savour the good stuff more too!
